CFWabash Jonathan Snyder Memorial Scholarship

Jonathan Snyder was killed in a tragic road accident in 1996, but at the age of 13, he was already known for his integrity and kindness. He was kind and caring and took time with anyone who needed a listening ear. He especially loved God, his friends, and music. This scholarship honors his life and provides an opportunity for a Northfield High School student to pursue a career in a helping profession, including, but not limited, to teaching, missions, counseling, and medicine.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Northfield High School graduate (current year)
  • GPA of 2.3 on a 4.0 scale
  • An essay highlighting how the applicant will have a positive impact on others and the world.

CFWabash Larry Shoemaker Memorial Scholarship

The Larry Shoemaker Memorial Scholarship was established in 2008 with funds raised by Southwood Music Parents to support music education for Southwood High School graduates. A written statement detailing how the candidate intends to use music in his or her life is required for application.

CFWabash Leone M. and Inez R. Tyner Scholarship

The Leone M. and Inez R. Tyner Scholarship was created in 1955 to honor Leonard Tyner’s late wife and his second wife. The scholarship assists worthy and ambitious young men and women of Wabash County to attend a church-related college or university. While he had a personal attachment to Methodist schools such as Asbury College in Kentucky and DePauw University in Indiana, he made the scholarship available for study at any church-related school.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Residents of Wabash County, preferably Lagro Township
  • Enrolling in a Protestant, Christian college or university, preferably, but not limited to, Asbury University or DePauw University

CFWabash Mallori L. Kastner Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship memorializes the life of Mallori Kastner, a 2010 graduate of Wabash High School, a talented athlete, and a team player who was killed tragically in an accident while a student at Grace College. Selection is based on specific character traits, including team cooperation, leadership, and commitment to the sport of volleyball. Academic performance and school involvement will also be considered.

Eligibility Requirements

  • A resident of Wabash County and a graduate of Wabash High School
  • Pursuing a two- or four-year undergraduate degree from any college or university
  • Graduating from high school with a GPA of "C" or better
  • Participating in high school volleyball during the entirety of their Wabash High School career

CFWabash Marietta & Paul L. Sell Memorial 4-H Scholarship

Doug and Barbara Vawter established this scholarship in memory of Barbara’s parents, Marietta and Paul Sell. The Sells were active in and supported numerous community, church, and 4-H events in Wabash County and modeled the virtues of the 4-H pledge (Head, Heart, Hands and Health) and motto (To Make the Best Better). They believed deeply in giving thanks with grateful hearts and reaching out with God’s love. Barbara Vawter says, “4-H has meant a lot to my family – the club teaches responsibility, perseverance, leadership, and doing the best you can. Members receive support and encouragement from adult leaders, while the program promotes independence, character-building, and self-confidence.”

  • U.S. citizen and resident of Wabash County
  • Graduate of Manchester High School within the last three years
  • Graduated from high school with a GPA of 2.0 or greater on a 4-point scale
  • Participated in 4-H for not less than six years

CFWabash Max E. and Grace L. Kester Endowment

Mrs. Kester began teaching physical education at Manchester High School in the late 1950s when few sporting opportunities were available to young women. She was the champion of girls’ sports before Manchester High School had a varsity program for girls. In the early sixties, she established a chapter of the Girls Athletic Association to even the playing field for girls and she dedicated many years to developing female sports.

CFWabash Orval H. Butts Athletic Scholarship

To honor her husband’s love of sports, Mrs. Lucille Butts created a scholarship for a Wabash High School student who has done the most to encourage school spirit and pride in athletic competition at Wabash High School, including athletes, team managers, cheerleaders, and fans.

Veteran teachers Pat and Steve Brubaker created this scholarship to encourage Northfield High School seniors to continue their education or skill training beyond high school. Selection of the recipient is based on financial need, character traits of compassion, kindness, and work ethic, school involvement, community service, and academic performance.

CFWabash Paul Thomas Reahard Memorial Scholarship

Paul Reahard taught English, creative writing, and theatre arts at Whitko High School where he was the recipient of the prestigious Dekko Foundation Teacher of the Year Award in 1996. His parents created this scholarship to carry on their son’s legacy of bringing out the best in students and awakening the spark of creativity within themselves. Selection will be based on academic performance, and financial need. Community service, work experience, or an indication of interest in and dedication to activities in performing arts, drama, theater, English literature, or creative writing are contributing factors.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Whitko High School students and students of all Wabash County high schools
  • Full or part-time students pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited institution who aspire to pursue a teaching career in the field of drama, theater, English, or literature, or a career in the performing arts
  • A minimum GPA of 7.0 on an 11.0 scale of the equivalent (B-average)
  • Traditional students only

CFWabash Raymond C. and Martha Ross Hood Scholarship

Martha Ross Hood was born in Wabash in 1932. Her parents operated a jewelry store, where Martha helped as a child, but when she grew up, she went to Indiana University to become a teacher. The Hoods created this scholarship to help hard working students build the means of taking care of themselves and their families. Students who have lived in the county at least three years and attended Wabash High School at least two years may apply. Recipients may study in any field, but preference will be given to a student who plans to pursue teacher education. The recipient will be active in extra-curricular activities, have financial need, and will have articulated a commitment to the Christian faith.

  • Wabash High School graduate in the past three years
  • Having graduated from high school with a grade point average of B- or better
  • Enrolling on a full-time basis in a two or four-year Indiana public or private institution of higher education

CFWabash Raymond C. and Martha Ross Hood Scholarship Endowment for Accounting Studies

Martha Ross Hood grew up in the business world. Her parents ran a retail store, and when Martha took a year off from college to compete in the Indiana State Gladiola Queen Contest, which she won, she spent the year travelling and working for the J. W. Lewis Insurance Agency. Students who have lived in the county at least three years and attended Wabash High School at least two years may apply. Recipients may study any field, but preference will be given to a student who plans to major in accounting. The recipient will be active in extra-curricular activities, have demonstrated financial need, and will articulate a religious affiliation and commitment to the Christian faith.

CFWabash Richard L. and Marna L. Hettmansperger Scholarship

When their Methodist Church building closed, the Hettmanspergers put the money from the sale of the church to work as a scholarship for graduate students who want to prepare for missions, ministry, or one of the helping professions, such as social work, counseling, nursing, public health, and education.

CFWabash Robert & Pauline Hoover Scholarship

The Robert and Pauline Hoover Scholarship was established in 2006 as part of Robert’s estate plan after he died. Robert had a degree in banking from Columbia University in New York City. When he finished his graduate degree, he came back to his native Chester Township to engage in farming and banking. Robert was the North Manchester Kiwanis Star of Service recipient and had a passion for civic and business affairs.

CFWabash Robert L. & Fay M. Elliott Scholarship

Robert L. and Fay M. Elliott’s children established this scholarship to honor their parents’ memory and support Wabash High School graduates seeking a career in education. Robert was a prisoner of war in World War II and taught biology at Wabash High School for 35 years. Faye taught special education and is credited with helping mainstream special education students into regular classrooms. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of financial need and academic performance.

CFWabash Sarah Kaye Haupert Memorial Dance Scholarship

The Sarah Kaye Haupert Memorial Dance Scholarship kindles the memory within us of a wonderful young graduate of Northfield High School who was so tragically lost to us. Sarah loved children and she loved to dance. The recipients of this scholarship are most like Sarah in their interests, especially the love of dance and elementary education. They are also chosen for their personality and character qualities, such as a positive mental attitude, enthusiasm, determination, and kindness toward others; faith as demonstrated through church and religious activities; and work experience and ethics.

CFWabash Ted McNabney Spartan Award

Ms. Rebecca Kock wanted to honor her brother's love of Manchester University and his passion for helping students succeed. To accomplish both, the Ted McNabney Spartan Award Endowment was created, which provides up to a $2,000 scholarship upon a student's graduation from a Wabash County high school. Students considering this scholarship, must apply during their 8th grade school year, and attend one Manchester University event each semester in high school to earn money that will be placed into their Promise Early Award Scholarship fund held at the Community Foundation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Student must apply for the scholarship during 8th grade and attend Manchester University events throughout high school
  • Must attend Manchester University
  • Be enrolled in the Promise Early Award Scholarship program at the Community Foundation

Spartan Scholar Requirements in high school: Spartan Scholars will

  • Maintain a 2.7 or better grade point average on a 4.0 scale in high school
  • Participate in at least one high school club or activity
  • Complete at least 10 hours of community service during high school
  • Participate in at least one designated campus activity during each semester of grades 9-12. Activities may change from time to time.
